The token leaderboard is finally dead.
I’ve made a bold claim that companies incentivizing AI usage do not have a real AI strategy.
It seems that was accurate.
404 Media has obtained leaked Slack chats, screenshots of internal dashboards, and emails from half a dozen companies including Atlassian, Adobe, and Amazon, who are now throttling their employees’ use of AI.
Amazon was one of the most prolific organizations to have recently shut down their token leaderboard. Citi has completely shut off access to Claude Opus and ChatGPT 5.5. Adobe’s unlimited Claude access plan expired on June 30th. Even GitHub is looking to lower spend by using open source models.
This was only a matter of time.
In what upside down world was it smart to throw a tool in hundreds of thousands of employees hands, with no training, with no cost ceiling, and incentivize them to spend as much money as possible?
Unfortunately, organizations like Accenture, who have pushed companies to adopt AI as fast as possible, are now positioning themselves as the solution to “token economics”. The fact that Accenture has any credibility at this point is beyond me.
